T is for tomatoes! Tomatoes contain a symphony of nutrients that may be responsible for their cancer-protective properties including vitamin A and C, fiber, potassium and lycopene. Lycopene has been linked with cancer protection in many studies, and tomatoes account for 80% of the lycopene in the American diet versus watermelon and guava. Experts recommend two to three servings per week of tomatoes – one cup of tomato juice contains 23 mg of lycopene! What are your favorite summertime tomato recipes? S is for strawberry! Did you know that an average strawberry has 200 seeds on it? Strawberries are fragrant, bright red fruits that are packed with fiber, vitamin C, folate, potassium and antioxidants. Retrospective, epidemiological studies indicate that strawberry ingestion may reduce the risk of colorectal cancer. Preliminary research also indicates that strawberries may be useful as an anti-inflammatory food and they also can enhance iron absorption in the body. Eating one cup of strawberries contains more than 149% of the recommended daily value of vitamin C! This important vitamin is a potent antioxidant and studies indicate that higher intakes of vitamin C play a vital role in immune function, may shorten the duration of colds, and are associated with a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease and cancer! If possible, choose organic! #wellnesswednesday #atoznutrition #rochesterny #irondequoitny #nutritioncareofrochester #registereddietitian #nutrition #eatright #eattherainbow #health #vitamins #strawberries #vitaminc #antioxidants #antiinflammatory #eatorganic #organic

R is for radishes! Did you know that radish root stimulates secretions in the upper GI tract, promotes motility, stimulates bile flow, and also has antimicrobial effects? Snacking on radishes can help you reach your daily vitamin C goal; ½ cup serving contains 8.6 mg or 14% of the recommended daily intake! Vitamin C works in the body to rebuild tissues, blood vessels, and maintain bones and teeth. This vitamin is not stored in the body, so you must replace it daily. Radishes also contain a group of compounds called isothiocyanates, which are shown to be effective against certain cancers. So next time you are making quinoa or rice and need some veggies to go along with it, throw in some radishes to maximize your health benefits! #wellnesswednesday #atoznutrition #rochesterny #irondequoitny #nutritioncareofrochester #radishes #vitaminc #registereddietitian #nutrition #vegetables #crunchy #red
